چکیده

I consider the problem of a monopolist serving a population of consumers with hidden types that use the goods sold by the monopolist as a signaling device. The discrimination opportunities that arise include interfering with the transmission of information. In particular, by restricting the variety of signals, and forcing subsets of consumers to pool, the monopolist can extract additional information rents. The model delivers a theory of restricted variety in the supply of conspicuous goods.
